It is preferable to create a nice transition from the artwork to the frame without the mat overpowering the art. Determining how wide your mat border should be is a personal preference. Typically, a mat border has a 2", but on larger pieces, it may be as wide as 3", 4" or 5". All four borders can be the same size, or, if preferred, the bottom border can be 1/2" larger than the other three sides.
