ROBERTA LONDON
Palm City, FL
I was born in New York where I lived and worked until settling in Florida in 2006. Many years working in film, video and television production sharpened my focus and refined my skills in visual storytelling. My goal was to use words and images in ways that would absorb and move viewers. I flirted with still photography during those formative years, but it wasn’t until my move to Florida that I realized the flirting stage was over and it was time for a serious relationship. The Florida landscape filled with stunning flowers, colors and shapes had utterly captivated me.
I’m a through-the-lens explorer and composer. Most of my floral images are captured in the field in natural light. My composition, perspective and especially the play of light, create a strong sense of place and result in images that are dramatic and moving. As a composer, I isolate aspects of a flower so that its fragility or strength, its vulnerability or endurance, can be experienced. The images draw the viewer in for a close, personal encounter.
The guiding principal as I work is my belief that a photograph -- a fine art photograph --should set a mood, impart a sense of place and above all stir one’s emotions. My approach to photography is not to document the perfect orchid or tulip or lily. Instead it is to create an image that is rich with atmosphere and emotion.
