RALPH VOGLER
Decatur, GA
Ralph Vogler has had a long-standing interest in painting. He began taking lessons from local artists in the 1960's. Although he trained some at the Atlanta College of Art most of his training was under the tutorship of Roman and Constantine Chatov, who trained under Brockman in New York, and later Roman’s son Marc. T hey became the leading portrait painters in the Southeast where they trained many artists. It was in those classes where Vogler developed his interest in the figure and portraiture. More recently he has studied with Chris DiDomizio His work has appeared in many exhibits locally, statewide and in New York.
Although influenced by the colors and style of the impressionists I paint realistically whether it is a landscape, still life, portrait or figure. I try to enhance the awareness of color, contrast and transparency of shadows. My paintings are mostly oil. Often I use the alla prima technique painting directly on the white surface. Other times I start with a primed canvas. My goal is to provide the viewer with an image that conveys a message of beauty, humor, sadness or joy.
