ANNE PRICE YATES
Portland, OR
My fascination with art began as soon as I could hold a pencil. I studied at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh in the special Saturday Tam-O-Shanter and Palette classes from fifth grade until my high school freshman year when my family moved. I was experimenting with oil, acrylic, and casein paints by the time I was 13. I learned to paint with the three primary colors, always mixing them to avoid using raw primary hues. Subdued initially, the colors on my canvases became brighter and cleaner during and after the years I lived in Florida, the Philippines, and the Mojave Desert, but they remain blended.
My early work focused primarily on figures. The human form has always fascinated me, and as an art major at Florida State University, my figure-drawing classes were my favorite classes. Later while living in Washington State, I again studied portrait and figure drawing and painting. After plein-air oil-painting workshops in Provence during summers of 2000 and 2001, I painted primarily impressionistic landscapes. I continue to enjoy landscape painting, although now my subjects are varied. Since moving to Oregon in 2005, I have added watercolor to my choice of mediums and was juried into the Watercolor Society of Oregon. While in California I became a member of the National League of American Pen Women in both Arts and Letters. My art was featured in the June 2005 issue of The Pen Woman, with my painting of Cadonet Street Scene on the cover. I have exhibited in numerous juried exhibits and galleries in New York and California as well as in Oregon.
